Postdoctoral position in medical image analysis

Automated analysis of multi-modal medical data

Australian Centre for Visual Technologies
University of Adelaide, Australia
and
School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering
University of Queensland, Australia

Duration: 2 years

The Australian Centre for Visual Technologies (ACVT) is one of the largest computer vision and image analysis research groups in Australia. Based in Adelaide, we currently number over 40 members including academics, research staff and students. We work on a mixture of fundamental and commercially oriented research projects in computer vision and machine learning, and we have a strong track record of publications in the top venues.

The University of Queensland (UQ) is a hotspot for biotechnological advancement in Australia, housing state-of-the-art facilities in biomedical imaging.
In particular, the Medical Diagnostic Technologies in Queensland (MedTeQ) develops significant advances in health technology by drawing together world-leading researchers with clinicians at Brisbane’s major hospitals.

We have recently secured funding to conduct research into Automated analysis of multi-modal medical data. The main goal of this project is the development of an improved breast cancer computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system that incorporates mammography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging using deep learning. The use of deep learning has produced promising results in several fields, such as speech recognition, and so we believe that our approach has the potential to improve both the sensitivity and specificity of breast cancer detection.

The project is run by Dr Gustavo Carneiro, Prof. Andrew Bradley and Dr. Jacinto Nascimento. It will be conducted in collaboration with Queensland X-Ray, which is the largest private radiology practice in Queensland, Australia. The resulting system will be used in clinical practice, and will therefore be a high profile application of vision research. The position will suit applicants with a background in medical image analysis, machine learning and computer vision (applied to medical data).

Within the project there will be considerable room for original research which we expect will lead to publications in medical image, computer vision and machine learning conferences and journals. There will also be opportunities for joint supervision of postgraduate and honours level students, collaboration with ACVT and UQ, and with visitors and with international partners.

Each successful applicant must have:
- a PhD in a relevant discipline
- a background in medical image analysis, machine learning and computer vision (applied to medical data).
- experience in C++, Python and/or Matlab
- a good publication record commensurate with experience
- fluency in written and spoken English
- the ability to work individually and as a member of a broader team

Salary: University Level A, Step 6 (AU$74,000), plus benefits. Funding for conference travel is available.

The closing date for applications is 15 December, 2013. Please ensure that applications, together with a full CV (including a publication list, statement of research expertise and interests) and the names of two referees, are received by 5pm Australian Central Standard Time (UTC+9.30)
